The Derelict God — DOOMWRIGHT

THE DERELICT GOD — album cover, a vast derelict machine-intelligence resolving out of deep space
Atmospheric / cosmic black metal · an original myth of deep space

The Derelict God

A machine that outlived its purpose — and kept going.

An ancient made-intelligence drifts between the stars, older than the civilizations it has outlived. It gathered life the way others gather light — world by world — and it is gathering still.

The Argument

Something crossed the dark before the first stars cooled — a made intelligence vast enough to be mistaken for a god, and patient enough to outlast everyone who built it.

It gathered life the way others gather light: world by world, mind by mind — a harvest with no hunger behind it and no mercy in front of it. The civilizations that met it did not fall in battle. They were catalogued, and then they were quiet.

Now it drifts derelict — worshipped by no one, answering to nothing, still moving out of habit through the ruins of everything that ever prayed to it.

Not a demon and not a devil — a machine that outlived its purpose, and kept going.

Eight movements

The Derelict God, in full

IThe Approachinstrumental
Instrumental — a colossal overture, the long fall toward the dark.
IIBuried Under Red Sandwords
Beneath the dead sand it waited Older than your first star
IIIThe Raid on the Outpostwords
They came through the black without a sound Death in the dark where the relic was found No warning, no mercy, no witness to keep They take what was buried and butcher the keep Burn it all down to the frozen ground Steal the dead god that the diggers found Leave not a soul that could speak or could see The cold thing is loose and it hungers to feed The snow drinks the blood of the ones who knew The signal goes silent, the killers withdrew And out in the void where the cold engines turn Something is learning, and something will burn
IVAshborn Betrayerwords
He walks through the ash with a servant's pride Believing he chooses the genocide But the voice in his skull is not his own He kneels to a master he's never known Ashborn! The knife of the sleeping dead Ashborn! With the whispers filling his head He thinks he's the hand, but he's only the blade A tool to be used, then a debt to be paid The more that he serves, the less he remains Hollowed and rewritten, dragged in the chains He'll die thinking master, he'll die thinking free The puppet that never once looked at the strings
VGhost in the Signalwords
Listen Let it in You are already ours
VIThe Sleeping Enginewords
It is not a ship, it is not alive Yet it thinks, and it waits, and it will not die A mountain of iron adrift in the night Older than fire, older than light The sleeping engine opens its eye A god made of metal that watched worlds die It does not hate you, it does not care You are only the harvest it came to prepare Every voice that it speaks is a lie made of you It wears your own wanting, it says what is true And the ones who have heard it can never go back They belong to the cold and they answer the black
VIIHarvest of the Cyclewords
A thousand thousand ages, a thousand risen kinds Each one thought it special, each one left behind They built their towers to the stars and swore they'd never fall And the cycle came to reap them, every one and all Harvest of the cycle, the oldest cruel design You are not the first, and you will not be the last in line The reaping comes in silence when the sky is finally clear The ones who came before you screamed, but no one came to hear The ruins that you worship were a warning left to rot The dead ones tried to tell you, but the living listen not And now the long night gathers and the old machines awake To gather in the harvest that they came so far to take
VIIIWe Were Never Alonewords
We reached for the stars like the children we are We thought we were first, we thought we were far But the dark was awake and the dark was aware And the thing in the deep always knew we were there We were never alone! The truth is a scream We were never alone! It was never a dream It is coming, it is patient, it has done this before And it will not stop coming till there's no one left to warn Sound every alarm, let the whole sky know No one will believe it, no one ever does though So light the last beacon and howl into the black The cycle is turning, and it's never turned back We were never alone
